Basalt fiber

In cooperation with some research institutes, the Kamenny Vek explored several dozens of deposits around the world and continues to conduct geological works at new deposits in order to analyze the morphological and chemical composition of the rock and their influence on the melting and drawing process, as well as on the final properties of fiber. For the production of Basfiber, we use raw materials from certified deposits with absolutely stable and balanced characteristic that can provide us with absolutely reliable technological process and high mechanical characteristics, thermal protective properties and chemical resistance of our Basfiber® products.

Basalt has already been used in construction and industrial applications for a long time. In the form of cast products, it has found its application due to its durability, strength, resistance to high and low temperatures, to aggressive chemical environments. An essential advantage of this material is its naturalness and safety for the environment. Basalt fiber has the same advantages as cast products, but, in addition, it is suitable for textile processing, resin and concrete reinforcement and, as a result, can be successfully used in a variety of areas in the composite industry, thermal insulation and construction.

Studies of the possibility of manufacturing fiber from basalt began in around 1960 in parallel in the US and in the former USSR. Initially, basalt fiber was considered as a safe alternative to asbestos in thermal protection and a stronger alternative to E-glass fiber in applications where higher tensile strength is required in composite products. Later on, high properties and relatively low price of basalt fiber allowed it to replace the more expensive S- glass and carbon fiber in some applications where increased properties were required, but there were limitations related to the cost of raw materials. With the development of technologies and new unique composite products, such as reinforcing mesh, high-pressure cylinders, basalt rebar and profiles, various types of basalt fabrics, the scope of basalt materials has significantly expanded.

High-strength basalt fiber is now widely used in the automotive industry, boat building, industrial applications, thermal protection, construction, etc. One of the most promising direction of the use of continuous basalt fiber is the maximum realization of the strength properties of basalt roving in the manufacture of blades of wind power generators.

The properties of continuous fiber Basfiber® are close, and in some cases exceed the properties of high-strength glass and other special fibers, however, it has a significantly lower price. Over the past 10 years, many companies around the world, specializing in the production of composites and previously using fiberglass or expensive special fibers, were able to improve the competitiveness of their products and expand their product range by switching to basalt fiber due to its undoubted advantages in properties and price.
